One of the best ways to view the walled town and the long golden beaches of St Malo is when you are sailing into the port early in the morning. The beaches near St Malo stretch all the way along the Northern Brittany Coast and are very easy to get to.
You can explore the town of St Malo before heading off on the toll-free carriageways leading to many adventures and opportunities at a range of destinations. It is a small city but it has a long history to go with those beaches. An example of the history is that St Malo is also called the City of Corsairs, because the corsairs, or privateers preyed at will on the English ships crossing the channel in the 18th and the 19th centuries. There are some ancient streets which heave with restaurants, bars and boutiques in addition to the citadel.
The walls of the city are 20 feet thick. They were originally built in the 14th century, although the military architect Vauban designed most of what still stands in the 18th century. You can climb up on top of the ramparts and walk around them for a full mile.
South of the citadel is the Grand Acquarium, to which you can take bus number 5 from St Malo station. The Acquarium uses impressively lit tanks full of acquatic life to explain the "Mysteries of the Sea" in a fun and family-friendly way. You can also ride underwater past a lost city and past wrecks on the "Nautibus. The acquarium costs £9 for entry.
St Malo features several museums echoing the distinctive history and culture of Brittany. Le Mont St Michel, which is a spectacular monastery that is often cut off at high tide as it is built on a semi island. The mussel and oyster farms nearby welcome visitors who like those delicacies. You've got plenty of places to stay both within the walled city and down by the seafront.
Some people like to sit on the beaches or walk along the marinas and admire the splendid vistas. Others like to go on a long walk.
There are all sorts of hotels in St Malo. The Hotel Elizabeth is a 16th century town house which has been classify refurbished with arts and crafts touches blending with minimalist paintings and old stone walls and heavy beams in some of the communal areas. It is £145 for a large room which includes a bathroom although it is cheaper for smaller rooms. The Hotel de France de Chateaubriand costs about £74 is a grand neo-classic hotel with a gilt-pillared and panelled restaurant. The Hotel Bar Le Nautilus meanwhile is an old townhouse which has been modernised and costs only £46 a night.
